So the election is tomorrow. Finally.
I’ve kept my tumblr largely election-free, but I thought I’d say a thing or two now.
This has been a heated campaign on both sides. Everyone’s been passionate about it. Many of you have given your time, resources and hard hard cash. That is incredible inspiring.
I hope that my guy wins tomorrow, and I think he will.
But if he doesn’t, if your guy doesn’t win, the most important thing is not to lose hope. There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth from the losing side after the election. But I hope that side can accept the decision of the American electorate, move on, and begin thinking about how they can stay involved, and continue to make a difference. Only one party wins. This is the way our system works. It has, incredibly, worked smoothly this way for over 200 years. That’s not something that just happens, and we owe the smart motherfuckers in powdered wigs a great deal for the creation of this system. Let’s honor their memories by accepting the decision of the people tomorrow. It’s not a perfect system by any means, but it’s a system that was designed, in a time when the average vehicle had 1-2 (literal) horsepower, to be flexible enough to work centuries later, in a time when I can watch a magic moving image on a mystical wall of light of a hamster on a piano-forte eating a kernel of popped corn.
And one other thing.
If Proposition 8, for some unthinkable reason, passes tomorrow, I will be ashamed to call myself a Californian. A vote in favor of Proposition 8 is a vote in allegiance with segregation, Jim Crow laws, internment camps, Indian subjugation, and all of the worst mistakes this country has made. I don’t think I know anyone fearful and ignorant enough to help perpetuate another mistake of this magnitude, but if you do, please convince them otherwise.
Well said , Matt. I was about to post how tomorrow’s election was like the slogan for the first Alien Vs. Predator...
Eloquently put, dear Matt.
